Alison Kim

Alison E. KIM Alison was born in the Presidio, San Francisco, California 11 August 1954 and died June 1, 2005, from respiratory failure following an 8-year struggle with ALS. She was raised in a military family, living in many states and Germany until settling in Arizona where she finished high school and completed a B.S. at the University of Arizona. Alison's wide-ranging curiosity and penchant for research led her into jobs as a technician for biological and biomedical researchers, first in Arizona and then in Seattle after moving here in 1984. She worked for a number of different hospitals, government agencies, and universities, becoming an accomplished microscopy technician, until her final position at the Department of Zoology, University of Washington. Her work was an important part of Alison's life; she was dedicated to helping others achieve their research goals. However, her interests and passions carried far beyond that, including her beloved gardening, writing (she was a published short-story author), opera, jazz festivals, hiking/kayaking, and love of the fine arts. Her beauty and strength, her eyes and smile were a wonder and delight to behold. Alison was a rare woman who could do a valve job on her car in the afternoon and be a stunning presence at the opera in the evening. She is preceded in death by father Danny and brother Waldy and is survived by mother Connie, brother Mike, and a funny family of devoted companions. Memorial Service to be held at Center for Urban Horticulture, (3501 NE 41st St.), July 17, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Alison would prefer donations made to the ALS Society and/or the P-Patch Trust.
